Reducing Wildfire Risk On Your Property

Over the past decade, large numbers of people have migrated to Oregon and settled in areas where wildfire is a common occurence.  Many of these residents are unaware of the wildfire risks they face. Residents may also have unrealistic expectations concerning the ability of land managers to control wildfire risks.

Research has shown that whether or not a home survives a wildfire depends primarily on materials used to build the home and fuel characteristics within 40 meters of the home, rather than conditions in the surrounding forest.

Homeowners in wildland-urban interface areas can take a number of steps to increase their readiness if a wildfire breaks out. This section of the Oregon Wildfire Risk Explorer contains resources for homeowners to learn about firesafe landscaping, firesafe building materials, and managing vegetation on their properties to reduce wildfire risks.
