In 2005, the State of Oregon and NOAA Fisheries completed a collaborative project to address the conservation of coastal coho on the Oregon Coast. A primary objective of the project was to assess efforts by Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds partners to conserve and rebuild coastal coho populations. Initially, NOAA Fisheries Service listed Oregon coastal coho as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1998. The fisheries service announced in January 2006 that the Oregon coastal coho Evolutionarily Significant Unit (ESU) was not warranted for listing under the Act. Although this population of coho is not now listed as threatened, the State of Oregon, its partners under the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, and NOAA Fisheries Service continue to work together to restore these fish.

There are two tools for exploring this information, the ESU Explorer tool and the Interactive Case Study tool. The ESU tool presents data on a number of key Limiting Factors analyzed for the Coastal Coho Assessment project. The data are presented for the entire Evolutionarily Significant Unit and are displayed for each of the Coho Population Units.

The Interactive Case Study tool presents a key limiting factor from the Coastal Coho Assessment on an individual Watershed Level as a case study. This tool combines the data compiled at the State and Federal level with data and efforts being undertaken at the Watershed Council level. The Interactive Case Study tool includes a number of interactive map and data exploration functions.

Interactive map controls are embedded in the text of the article, allowing you to visualize the process of culvert prioritization with the context of actual watershed data. These interactive tools are highlighted to the right of the text.

Check boxes are provided for you to toggle map layers on and off. The "Zoom to!" function allows you to zoom in on a location that is of particular interest.

You can also explore the map and data directly by using the "Interactive Layers" and "Map Tools" panels in the upper-right of the display. "Interactive Layers" include all the base layers that are used in the article, with the addition of topography and land ownership. These layers have an extra feature that allows you to "Fade" them in and out to a desired level.

The "Map Tools" allow you to zoom and navigate the map directly. You can zoom in or out stepwise or jump to a specific zoom level using the horizontal zoom tool. Navigating the map is easy; once you have zoomed in, you can drag the purple highlighted box to any part of the inset map.

The "Previous View" button allows you to toggle between your last two views of the map, and the "Full Extent" button returns you to the view of the entire watershed.

Also in the Map Tools panel, you can choose an option for how to interact with the main map itself: zooming or dragging. With "Zoom in" selected, you can either click once on the map or draw a box to select an area to zoom to. With the "Drag map" function, you simply need to grab the map directly to move to a new location.
