Invasive Invertebrates

Invasive invertebrates can be a serious problem in aquatic systems and are invading at a rapid pace. Most recently, the invasion of the zebra mussel has caused concern sue to the rapid changes to the ecosystem that it invades.

The following are a list of invasive aquatic invertebrates that are a portion of the "Top 100" invasive species in Oregon.

  • Japanese shore crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus)

  • Leidy's comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi
  • mitten crabs Eriocheir spp.*
  • New Zealand isopod Sphaeroma quoyanum
  • New Zealand sea slug Philine auriformis
  • rusty crayfish Orconectes rusticus
  • spiny waterflea Bythotrephes cederstroemi
  • veined rapa whelk Rapana venosa
  • zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha
