Juniper Control. Oregon Public Broadcasting, Oct. 28, 2010

A single western juniper can suck 25 gallons of water out of the earth on a hot day. In eastern Oregon 6 million acres are now covered by these relentlessly thirsty trees, leaving the desert even drier than before. Ranchers and researchers believe removing many juniper by cutting or burning them may be the best solution.
