Tumalo Creek

Tumalo Creek, located ten miles west of Bend, Oregon, was the subject of a major restoration effort between the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council and the Deschutes National Forest. Between 2003 and 2008 the partners worked together to restore fish habitat and stream stability to a section of the creek most affected by fire and salvage logging. In 1979, the Bridge Creek Fire and subsequent salvage logging left this three-mile section without any woody debris to provide habitat for fish or prevent streambank erosion. The restoration plan included re-meandering the creek, placing 3,000 large logs in the stream for fish habitat and shade, and planting more than 70,000 individual native plants.

The restoration project involved many student volunteers, including students from nearby Summit High School. Other partners included the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, National Forest Foundation, the City of Bend, the Deschutes River Conservancy, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
